13 Pets I have Loved
1. Rodger. Rodger was my first pet I ever owned. He was a cockatiel, more or less my mom’s because I was only 4. But he liked me, and he would sit on my shoulder and let me walk around with him on my shoulder. I liked him alot, he talked to me and I liked the chirping. He died suddenly, our neighbors Siamese cats ran into our house through an open back door and got to him.
2. Monty. Monty was my mom’s dog, a purebred long haired Dachshund that was an anniversary present from my dad. He barked alot, at anything and everything (including us) that came to the house. It annoyed the neighbors alot. One day my dad had enough of the barking and gave him away to a couple with 5 other dogs. He was happy once he found a pack of dogs to belong to.
3. Koko. Koko was my first kitty. I stole her from my neighbor, a boy around my age, when I was 5 years old. His parents found her inside the hood of their car, after trying to start the car. When he showed me the cat I couldn’t stop crying for her and his parents gave the cat to me. She was a great kitty, she loved to sleep on my stomach at night after kneading out all the wrinkles in the blankets. She died when she was 16 years old, after a cold that turned into pneumonia. She was the first pet I really cried over and missed.
4. Reggie. Reggie was a golden retriever/terrier mix my dad’s friend gave to us. He was a sweet little dog. The only barking he ever did was the first week he moved in with us, but it was more howling like a coyote (he heard alot of them in Las Vegas) than actual barking. He was a sweet patient dog, who put up with alot of my then 2 year old little sister’s ear and tail pulling. At the ripe age of 18, he had a stroke and lost all his balance. Because he couldn’t even stand up to eat, we put him down.
5. Nikki. Nikki was an Australian Shepherd/Chow Chow mix we bought from a family selling her outside of Petco. She was possibly the best dog I ever had. She didn’t need any training, she was a great guard dog and excellent baby sitter. She was my sister’s first dog. She developed uterine cancer at 5 years old and had to be put down.
6. Kiwi. Kiwi was my second cockatiel. My mom bought him for me from Petco, he looked a little beaten up and malnurrished, looking like he had a kiwi green head crest, where he got his name from. We spent the summer together while my mom worked, and I brought him back to health. He loved me to death, following me like a dog (not flying) everywhere I went around the house. He trusted me and never flew away when I would take him places, even the outdoor malls, or when I put him on my horse’s back. At 6 he had a heart attack.
7. Azure. Azure was a parakeet that was technically my sister’s, she got jealous when I got Kiwi. He learned how to let himself out of the cage, and would then let the other birds out. He also learned how to talk and would tell himself to go home or be quiet. After the first fires in 2004, he inhaled too much smoke and got a respiratory infection.
8. Angel. Angel was a black mask Lovebird, also belonging to my sister. She had an infatuation with Kiwi, but Azure had a thing for her. It was a weird bird love triangle. She never really became tame, but she did let us touch her and take her home to her cage. She also died to to a respiratory infection.
9. Freckles. My sister fell in love with rabbits, and we found a Holland lop breeder locally that had cute bunnies. We bought him and he was adorable. He loved to cuddle more than any other bunny I’ve come across. He suddenly got a bad case of indigestion, and while at the veternarian, died suddenly of a heart attack caused by the barking dogs.
10. Yogi. When I first started working at my pet store, a customer returned an older guinea pig because “he bites”. I took him home, for free, and he was the cutest thing ever. He would get very excited when he heard or smelled the veggie bag come to his cage. He loved my mom the most, he loved sleeping on her pillow at night. During the 2007 fires, he suffered a respiratory infection and we lost him.
11. Isis. A customer at my store had an accidental litter of Akita and black Lab puppies. I wanted another dog badly and thought this would be perfect. It was, she was a great, happy dog. She loved me and loved sleeping on my bed, and couldn’t understand why I kicked her off when she weighed 50 pounds. She loved walks and going to the dog park, but only to visit the people. She was a great guard dog. When we moved out to the country she barked at coyotes and the bicyclists when the passed the property. I gave her to a loving family who had more time for her when I found out I was pregnant.
12. Oso. Oso started out as my husband’s dog, he was an 8th grade graduation present. When I came into my husband’s life, Oso wasn’t too fond of me. He was very shy and unsure of me. It wasn’t until we moved in together that he really loved me, often whining for me when he knew I should be home for work. He’s a great dog, never barks and is very house broken.
13. Benji. Benji is my last and final cockatiel. He originally was intended for my little sister, but bonded to me when I hand tamed him. He loves me and only me, he doesn’t even like other birds. He is a great bird, he loves to sing (sometimes too much), and he even thinks he is a good guard bird.
